Short Armor rods

General recommendations

Short armor rods are intended to protect conductors/strands against bending, compression, abrasion and recover the damage and to provide restorative repair.

 Protection
The degree of protection needed on specific line depends upon a number of factors such as: line design, temperature, tension, exposure to wind flow and vibration history on similar construction in the same area. As a general guide the following

recommendations may be adapted to the specific conditions:
(a) Short armor rods are recommended as minimum protection for hand ties spans of less than 90m in urban construction having no experience of vibration.
(b) No consideration of damping devices with Short armor rods is made because Short armor rods are not recommended when vibration is suspected.
(c) Top Ties are recommended as being superior to Short armor rods secured with hand tie wire. They protect against chafing or wear caused by wind sway or unbalanced loading in areas having no experience of vibration

Restorative repair
Short armor rods may be used as patch rods designed to restore full conductivity and mechanical strength to conductors/strands where damage does not exceed approximately 25% of the outer strand layer and when it is located outside the support area.

Tapping
Short armor rods may be used as tap armor to protect conductors from wear and flash-over under taps.

Application and inspection
Ensure the correct size fitting is used. For detailed method of installation refer to application instructions

Single and double support length
When armoring is required for double support of conductor, the rods are longer than for single support.

Material used
Short armor rods are made of material compatible with the conductor/strand to which they are applied.

Production Characteristics

1.Color Code: Assist in identification of conductor size
2.Rods per set: Indicates the correct number of rods for each application

3.Identification label: Shows catalogue number and strand diameter range.
4. Lay direction: Must be same as that of the outer layer of the strand to which it is applied
